IDU Explanation: Here are a few details about our unit titled Be Accurate… or Else! Your student’s Math and Science teachers have teamed up to create a unit that explores the concept of accuracy.
Mathematics Assessment Strands:
i. Use appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols, and terminology)
iv. Explain the degree of accuracy of a solution
Start Date:
Blocks (B, C, D) on Sunday 7, October
Blocks (F, G) on Monday 8, October
Math Topics:

IDU Criterion A, B, C, D Explanation:
This overall grade will appear in a separate class on the report card. Below, is an explanation of each criterion:
Criterion A: Disciplinary Grounding
Criterion B: Synthesizing
This will be assessed during Science. When students rewrite their scientific procedure, they will be synthesizing their knowledge from both Math and Science.
Criterion C: Communicating
This will be completed in Math Class after the scientific procedure summative is completed in Science.
Criterion D: Reflecting
This will be completed in Math Class after the scientific procedure summative is completed in Science.
Mathematics Assessment Strands:
- Criterion C: Communicating
i. Use appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols, and terminology)
- Criterion D: Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts
iv. Explain the degree of accuracy of a solution
Start Date:
Blocks (B, C, D) on Sunday 7, October
Blocks (F, G) on Monday 8, October
Math Topics:
- Using metric conversions and scientific notation to represent large and small quantities
- Determining the accuracy of a solution and how we can represent quantities appropriate for the audience.

What assignments should students do to prepare from the website?
- Accuracy Study Guide
- This document lists the different ways we have studied accuracy in math class.
- Playlist: Any Activities on Khan Academy or “Extend Your Thinking” from boxes 1-2.
Formatives (what formatives should I look out for on the Formative Work Playlist?):
- Scientific Notation & Metric System Formative
- Scientific Procedure Formative

IDU Criterion A, B, C, D Explanation:
This overall grade will appear in a separate class on the report card. Below, is an explanation of each criterion:
Criterion A: Disciplinary Grounding
- Best fit grade between the Math strand grades and Science strand grades.
Criterion B: Synthesizing
- How well did you connect the knowledge you learned between Math and Science?
This will be assessed during Science. When students rewrite their scientific procedure, they will be synthesizing their knowledge from both Math and Science.
Criterion C: Communicating
- Communicates student’s interdisciplinary understanding through a reflection
- Acknowledges the sources they used to show how Math and Science connects to accuracy. They can use class assignments as a source.
This will be completed in Math Class after the scientific procedure summative is completed in Science.
Criterion D: Reflecting
- Evaluates successes and areas of growth in this IDU
- Explains why interdisciplinary units are important for our learning
This will be completed in Math Class after the scientific procedure summative is completed in Science.
